As followers of Jesus Christ, we know that the Christian way is a way of community. This is the foundational reason behind the Nineveh Journey; we all have some responsibility in society, and one of the responsibilities is to pray for each other. Prayer of this sort is a gift to our brothers and sisters in Christ, especially when made in a spirit of generosity and love.
Even after death, those who see the face of God can still pray for those on earth. We therefore ask for the intercession of the Immaculate Mother of God, who still wishes to give us the gift of her prayers; we ask that she show us the care she showed her Son. Most of all, we ask for her prayers because God is glorified in those who demonstrate His goodness, as Mary does.
Nonetheless, we recognize that not everyone considers it appropriate to pray to the Blessed Virgin, and so we made that part of the prayer optional.
